The Honest Answer
Why Bay and Bow Windows Cost What They Do
There is a reason the quote for a bay makes people sit down. Five of them, actually.
They are an assembly, not a window
A bay or bow is multiple separate window units joined together at angles, into a single structure. You are buying several windows plus the work of making them one thing.
They need their own roof and floor
Because the unit projects out from the house, it has to carry its own head, seat board, and support structure - none of which exist on a flat opening.
The projection has to be done right
Anything that sticks out of a wall is a structural and weather detail. It has to be flashed and insulated correctly, or it becomes a slow leak into the wall cavity.
Everything is custom
Each assembly is built to your specific opening and angles. There is no volume pricing and no stock units sitting in a warehouse.
Installation takes far longer
What is a one-day flat window swap becomes a multi-day project involving structure, roofing, and trim work - inside and out.
The Alternative
What Most Homeowners Decide Instead
Once people see the actual number for a bay or bow, a common choice is to keep the wall flat: a large fixed picture unit in the center, with an operable double hung or slider on each side, installed in the existing opening.
It keeps the light and the view - that is what most people actually wanted from the bay in the first place. It costs a fraction of a projecting assembly. It performs better thermally, because there is no projecting box hanging off the side of the house losing heat through its own roof and seat. And it removes the bay's head, roof, and seat board as future maintenance and leak points.
The Other Side of It
When Keeping the Bay Makes Sense
This page would be dishonest if it only argued one way. Sometimes keeping the bay is genuinely the right call. If the bay is original to the architecture of your home, the house can look wrong without it - that matters, and no flat replacement fully fixes it. If you actually use the seat - reading, plants, the dog's favorite spot - you are not going to get that back from a picture window. And if removing the projection means structural and siding work that costs more than it saves, the math has already made the decision for you.
This is a real decision with two legitimate answers. Anyone who tells you there is only one has something to sell you.
What We Would Tell You
"We are straight with people about this. If you want a bay because you love the bay, we will point you to someone who does that work well. If what you actually want is the light and the view without the price, that is a conversation we can help with - and it is the one most people end up having."
